Photovoltaic panels on the roofs of railway stations, workshops and industrial areas, energy efficiency upgrades of trains and buildings, and then more plans for zero-emission sustainable mobility. The FS Italiane Group has launched a programme for the self-generation of renewable energy, with the goal of achieving 2 GW of new capacity from green sources to meet 40% of its energy needs, confirming its intention to proceed swiftly on the track to 'carbon neutrality' and energy transition.
The annual energy that could be produced would amount to around 2.6 TWh and would guarantee a reduction in CO2 emissions of around 800,000 tonnes for an investment of EUR 1.6 billion needed to ground the systems. This is a significant acceleration towards the decarbonisation of transport, therefore, with clean, renewable energy coming from real solar farms.
Development of new electrification, with the elimination of diesel traction, which can be supplemented with new energy self-generation plants and the use of innovative battery-powered rolling stock in order to overcome certain critical issues related to interference with civil engineering works on existing lines.
As regards energy and emissions, rail is one of the most efficient types of transport, and the FS Group's commitment is focused on a significant reduction of CO2 emissions by using more and more renewable sources in order to become carbon neutral by 2050.
Upgrading of railway electrical systems for both traction and railway station power supply.
Various technological innovations relating to the regulation and recovery of traction energy and energy analyses of the Group's stations and buildings were presented with a view to reducing absoprtion while guaranteeing the performance levels required by the system.
