As part of the Open Italy 2023 Program, Italferr, the engineering company of the Infrastructure Hub of the Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane Group, participated, among others, in a co-innovation project focused on the analysis and management of large volumes of documents. The actors involved, in Open Innovation logic, were Elis Innovation Hub, as promoter of the initiative, and the start-up BlueTensor, active in the field of Generative Artificial Intelligence.
The analysis of large quantities of documents is a crucial task for the resources involved in job order management and requires a great deal of time and resources. Often, the vast amount of data does not allow a detailed analysis for short-term vulnerability detection. With this in mind, the PoC (Proof of Concept) DocsGuard-AI, in which Italferr's Risk Officer and Innovation & Technical PoC structures played a leading role, had the objective of enhancing office automation.
In this context, Generative Artificial Intelligence can be an ally in revolutionising these processes by improving efficiency and productivity.
The project achieved its objectives after 12 weeks of work. The office automation activity was enhanced through the use of Generative Artificial Intelligence models. On the basis of the documents provided, the demonstrator is able to answer the questions posed while pointing out probable vulnerabilities, as well as extract additional information of interest that is useful for risk analysis.
The DocsGuard-AI project is an important step for Italferr in the management of transport infrastructure projects. The use of Artificial Intelligence in this field allows to obtain immediate support in decision-making by providing up-to-date and accurate information, automates certain activities while freeing up time and resources to concentrate on other aspects of the project, improves the quality of the work produced thereby making the information more complete and precise, and allows requests to be taken care of in a more timely manner.
