As part of the upgrading of the Orte-Falconara main line, a fundamental route for the development of the regions it crosses through and for the improvement of the Tyrrhenian-Adriatic connection, the track-doubling works of the Genga-Serra San Quirico section - Lot 2 of the PM228-Castelplanio Doubling project were recently completed.
This Lot, which crosses the Province of Ancona and in particular the territories of the municipalities of Fabriano, Genga and Serra San Quirico, is financed with NRRP Funds. The other two Lots - PM228-Genga Doubling (Lot 1) and Serra San Quirico-Castelplanio Doubling (Lot 3) - are currently undergoing the authorization process.
The doubling of the PM228-Castelplanio section is part of a broader program - the Global Project - which aims at improving the frequency of services and reducing travel times between the Marche and Umbria regions and Rome, and also includes the doubling of the PM228-Albacina section (also financed with NRRP Funds), the Falconara Node, interventions pertaining to the speeding up of the Orte-Falconara, the doubling of the Spoleto-Campello section and the doubling of the Terni-Spoleto section.
The doubling of the Genga-Serra San Quirico section, about 9 kilometers long, almost completely as a variant from the historic line, makes it possible to increase the capacity of the line as well as its speed, going from the current 90 kilometers per hour to the 165 kilometers per hour envisaged in the project.
The project involves the construction of 6 tunnels, excavated by traditional method, for a total length of about 5 km (the longest being about 1.2 km), as well as of 4 viaducts for a total length of about 0.8 km and alternating embankments and trenches of about 3.2 km.
The intervention in question also includes the construction of the new Genga station, replacing the current one, and the redevelopment of the area serving the "Frasassi Caves" tourist site, on which the shopping area, ticket office and shuttle service, as well as parking spaces for cars and tourist coaches, are located.

For this intervention, Italferr took care of the design to be used as basis of the tender, supported RFI throughout the authorization phase, provided for the verification of the Project Executive drawn up by the Contractor as well as the acquisition of the areas, and will follow its realization until it is put into operation.
This achievement is the result of the commitment and expertise of a great team, proud to contribute to the realization of such an important work for the mobility of the area.
