New frontiers for the electrification of non-electrified lines

Italferr participates in the 24th IEEE Conference

On June 18, 2024, the "24th IEEE - International Conference on Environment and Electrical Engineering" was held in Rome at the Sala del Chiostro hall of the 'La Sapienza' University. The meeting provided an important opportunity for debate and exchange of know-how between energy experts from academia and industry.

In particular, Italferr – the engineering company of the FS Group's Infrastructure Hub - was invited to participate as part of the Special Session of WorkPackage No. 5 of MOST (National Center for Sustainable Mobility) - "Zero-carbon refuelling/recharging infrastructure and grids - Spoke 7 - Connected Networks and Smart Infrastracture."

During the event, a talk on innovative strategies for the electrification of the rail network was presented by engineer Roberto Consalvi, of the Energy and Electric Traction department, in which an innovative study proposing an extension of the electric traction system to non-electrified railway lines was illustrated.

More specifically, with a view to eliminating diesel trains, the study proposes an extension of electrification for low-traffic lines by harnessing the power of battery-powered trains to overcome interference with civil engineering works.

This scenario, therefore, allows for a significant reduction in emissions from the traction system, improving efficiency while at the same time containing the cost of building the infrastructure.

The content of the presentation is, moreover, the subject of a publication in which the authors Guido Guidi Buffarini, Roberto Consalvi and Simone Muglia - all Italferr engineers - describe, in addition to the methodology, some application examples of the study.

Participation in the 24th IEEE Conference consolidated Italferr's commitment alongside the FS Group to sustainable mobility, promoting the development of innovative rail infrastructure, and was an opportunity for constructive exchange with other players in the MOST plan and with the academic world in particular.
