Italferr is engaged in the infrastructural and technological upgrading of the Rome-Pescara line, divided into several phases and aimed at improving mobility between the Lazio and Abruzzo regions. The doubling, speeding and upgrade works will decrease travel time from the current 3 hours and 20 minutes to about 2 hours. The new Italian diagonal will also increase the line's capacity from 4 to 10 trains/h on the sections being doubled, with the possibility of establishing mass transit-type services between Chieti and Pescara.
