ERTMS, the most advanced system for the supervision and control of train spacing, has been activated on the Rome-Florence High Speed line, in the section between Arezzo South and Orvieto South (85 km). It is the second technological upgrade, after the one done on the Rovezzano-Arezzo (64 km), of a line 240 km long affected daily by the passage of numerous high-speed trains. It is strategic for rail mobility because it is among the busiest in Italy, which adds to the more than 700 kilometers of HS line already equipped with the new technology that in addition to ensuring higher performance, will also allow savings in operating and maintenance costs compared to traditional signalling systems.

The equipping of the entire line with the ETRMS system will be completed in September 2024, with the activation of the technology on the remaining 88 km between Orvieto Sud and Settebagni, on the outskirts of Rome. The new systems will thus make it possible to manage and supervise the entire ‘Direttissima’ line from the Bologna Central Post from the room dedicated to HS lines. The revamping of technologies will result in a significant improvement in service quality and traffic regularity, ensuring greater infrastructural reliability and management optimisation in the event of abnormalities.
