CHIASSO SUBSTATION

Increasing the potential and safety of mountain pass traction facilities and new power technologies.

The Swiss Federal Railways - SBB, in view of the expected increases in traffic resulting from the activation of the new Alpine crossings - Gotthard and Ceneri - have entrusted Italferr with a series of renovations and modifications of the existing structures, including the replacement of the current Electronic Interlocking (ACE), with modification of the General Redevelopment Plan (PRG) and a significant upgrading of the electrification systems.

The work involved specific technological consultancy, preliminary and executive design, support during the bidding phase and construction management of the new 3 kV electrical substation in Chiasso. The work defines a new set-up of the Italian/Swiss power system, with innovative aspects in both architecture and equipment, and will allow an increase in the capacity of border traffic in addition to the separate management of the new Italian and Swiss facilities.

Chiasso is an important railway junction interconnecting Italy and Switzerland, both for freight traffic via the Monte Olimpino 2 tunnel and for international passenger traffic between Milan and Zurich and regional traffic between Ticino and Lombardy.

Under the contract, Italferr will oversee the further work for SCMT signalling systems, TE, the subsequent Line of Contact phases, the acoustic remediation works, and the construction of the sound barriers that will be developed at the Chiasso station, from the state border to the south, on Italian territory.
