LINE 1 OF CAIRO METRO

Italferr, in partnership with the company EHAF (Egypt's leading engineering company and one of the top 100 in the world), was awarded a contract in Egypt for the verification of the project to modernise and upgrade the technology of the Cairo Metro Line 1.

The project, managed by the government agency National Authority for Tunnels (NAT) and financed by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), involves work to upgrade the track's superstructure, power supply, signalling, and telecommunications systems to the latest and safest technological standards, and the construction of a central command post. These interventions are aimed at a consistent improvement of the capacity, performance and safety of the metro line. The 18-month contract includes activities to integrate the various projects carried out for the different technological components, to prepare tender documents and support the client in the selection of contractors for carrying out the work. In addition, the client will be assisted with procurement procedures.

Urban traffic in Cairo, one of the most populous and extensive cities in the world with its population of 10 million, currently travels on three subway lines. Three more are in the planning and construction phases. Line 1, operational since 1989, is 44 km long with 35 stations and is used, now at full capacity, with peaks of 60,000 people per hour per direction.
