High-Speed Railway Bypass in Florence

"Marika", the TBM that will dig the second tunnel from Campo di Marte to Rifredi

"Marika" is ready, the Tunnel Boring Machine that will dig the second tunnel of the High-Speed Railway Bypass of Florence.

The presentation of the new TBM took place on Tuesday, November 5, 2024, at the Campo di Marte construction site in Florence. Present at the ceremony, along with local institutions and the FS Group, was the Italferr team, which has been entrusted with the task of Work Management and Environmental Monitoring for both the Florence construction sites and the S. Barbara mining area.

The High-Speed intervention in the Florence railway junction, related to the construction of the Railway Bypass, the new AV Florence Belfiore Station, and the connected infrastructural works to streamline the city's railway traffic, is an essential infrastructural intervention to ensure the completion of the North-South axis of the entire Milan-Naples High-Speed Project.

The start of the "Marika" TBM, which will be used to dig the tunnel for the southbound track, is scheduled to continue the activity of "Iris," the first TBM activated last year, which has already dug about 1.8 km in the Campo Marte - Belfiore section.

The project will free the surface network from the transit of high-speed trains, enrich the offer of regional services for the benefit of citizens, businesses, and economic and tourist activities, bring benefits to local and metropolitan mobility, and redevelop the municipal and railway areas between Belfiore and Santa Maria Novella.

The new configuration of the Florence railway network will ensure that high-speed trains no longer interfere with regional ones, thus improving their regularity and, at the same time, increasing the capacity of surface lines, paving the way for a potential increase in local services.
