METROPOLITANA DI DOHA

Inaugurated in 2019, it is the largest metro line work designed by Italferr

The enormous transformation process taking place in Doha is due to many ongoing projects (motorway, real estate, light rail,..) but certainly the Doha Metro is the most ambitious project to ‘realise the vision’ of the Qatari authorities and Italferr is proud to have accompanied the country on this journey.

Italferr received, from the joint venture (ISG) formed by Salini/Impregilo, SK E&C and the Contractor Galfar, the assignment of Consultant to perform, together with the partners COWI and OneWorks, the design of the Architectural, Civil and MEP (Mechanical, Electrical and Hydraulic) Works for the construction of the Red Line North Underground in Doha, Qatar.

The Company was also responsible for interface management, system assurance, requirement management, configuration and construction follow-up activities.

CHALLENGES FACED AND EXPERIENCE GAINED
The D&B Doha Metro project required Italferr's high performance capabilities and ability to properly carry out both Construction and Procurement, incorporating any changes and modifications requested by Contractors and Stakeholders.
This was one of the first projects in which Italferr ventured into the use of BIM methodology and gained experience from the opportunities and difficulties encountered. It was necessary to implement a system based on the use of a data sharing environment (ACdat) in interface with partners and to introduce the use of new specialised software. In order to meet this challenge, work was not only carried out in the purely technological sphere, but also training courses were set up that had to combine challenging timetables with the need to acquire new skills.
The project required an in-depth knowledge of international standards, mainly British and American (BS, NFPA, CIBSE, SMACNA), as well as local standards (Qatar Construction Specifications). The Contract is based on the FIDIC white paper while the design approach is based on RIBA standards according to the requirements of the Employer (Qatar Railways).
The challenging size of the project made the designers combine their efforts by pooling their know-how, taking into account the multiple management and negotiation activities related to working in a joint venture.
