MUMBAI METRO SYSTEMS

One of the most densely populated cities in the world with a population of over 18 million, Mumbai has implemented significant programmes to improve its transport infrastructure and in particular its rail infrastructure in order to alleviate traffic congestion and the problem of high pollution, much of which is due to car transport.

In 2018 Italferr, in JV with the Spanish engineering company Ayesa (leader of the grouping) and the local engineering company CEG, was awarded the General Engineering Consultancy contract for the extension of two corridors of the Mumbai metro system (Line 2B or Yellow Line and Line 7 or Red Line). The entire Mumbai Metro system comprises nine elevated corridors with a total length of 146.5 km, of which 32.5 km are underground.

The new Yellow Line is intended to connect Dahisar in the north-east of Mumbai with Mandale in the east: corridor 2B Nagar-Mandala - 23.6 km long mainly on viaduct, including 19 new stations and a maintenance depot.

To date, no stages or stations have been activated for Line 2B.

The new Red Line, which is already operational, connects Bhayander in the north of the city to the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in the south: Andheri East-Dahisar corridor - 16.5 km long mainly on viaduct, including 13 new stations and 2 maintenance depots.

The section was opened for commercial operation on 19 January 2023.

Client: MMRDA, Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority, government agency of the state of Maharashtra.

Planned duration of the contract: October 2016 - June 2024.
