Sustainable Innovations for Longlife Environmental Noise Technologies

Italferr, the engineering company of the Infrastructure Hub of the  FS Italiane Group, is the protagonist - together with RFI (Hub leading company) and Anas (Coordinator) - of the EU LIFE SILENT project that has as its overall objective the development of sustainable and eco-friendly solutions for mitigating the noise immissions produced by road and rail traffic in complex urban environments, where the implementation of sound mitigation measures along the propagation paths (noise barriers) is impractical due to space constraints and other factors such as visual impact and air circulation.

In the course of the project, low-noise pavements with recycled and non-toxic materials from the paper and used tyre supply chains will be tested and developed, along with low height noise barriers, also made of recycled materials and innovative technologies, to reduce noise emissions from rail traffic.

THE PROJECT PURSUES THREE SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES

1
Increase the durability of low noise pavements to reduce costs.
2
Improve the acoustic, structural, and safety performance of low height noise barriers (LHNB), through the development of an innovative solution.
3
Define procedures for managing and implementing noise mitigation measures in complex environmental scenarios.

PILOT SITE

The solutions developed will be tested and implemented at a real test site, located in a densely populated area known as Muratella, in Rome, Italy, with a population of approx. 154,974. This area is crossed through by the Rome-Fiumicino Airport railway line, managed by RFI, and by a Motorway, the A91, managed by Anas.

To this end, the activities, promoted and coordinated by the Production Services Department, in collaboration with the Administration, Finance and Control Department of Anas, started on 1 September 2023 and with a total duration of 60 months, will see the involvement of Italferr with the participation of the structures of Innovation & Technical POC, Sustainability and Acoustic and Vibrational Studies.

The project is subsidised within the LIFE program, the EU funding instrument for the environment and climate action, managed by CINEA (the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency).
