ANJI KHAD BRIDGE
The first railway cable-stayed bridge designed and built in India
In 2016, Italferr was awarded the Design and Works Supervision for the Anji Khad cable-stayed railway bridge, an iconic structure spanning the Anji Khad river along the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla railway line, designed to connect Kashmir to India’s northwestern borders.
Considering the characteristics of the Anji River, which flows through a deep gorge with sub-vertical walls, Italferr proposed and developed an iconic asymmetrical cable-stayed bridge solution.
Measuring 725 meters in length and 196 meters in height, the bridge features a 473-meter cable-stayed section, with a central span of 290 meters and an asymmetrical support tower. This unique design makes it India’s first cable-stayed railway bridge, and stands out as one of the most ambitious and challenging projects of the entire railway line.
Project implementation was completed in February 2024 and follow-up activities are ongoing.
Awards: The Anji Khad Bridge project was granted the Award of Merit in the Bridge/Tunnel category of the ENR Global Best Projects 2024. This prestigious recognition, conferred by an international jury that reviewed over 120 entries, highlights the project’s innovation and engineering quality, positioning it among the top infrastructure projects globally.
The ENR Global Best Projects Awards, presented annually by Engineering News-Record (ENR) magazine, celebrate the world’s most significant infrastructure projects, assessing entries based on criteria such as safety, innovation, and global impact.
